Weight Loss and Support Groups

Weight Loss and Support Groups

One of the best ways to obtain successful weight loss is by joining a support group. Not only do support groups offer the motivation to lose weight, but support groups also provide accountability to help keep your goal in sight. Weight Watchers is a household name, but there are many options to consider.

Religious Weight Loss Support Groups

One great place to find a weight loss support group is through a religious group. If you are active in a church or temple, you may find a weight loss support group already meeting at that particular location.

If there is not an established group, take the opportunity to start one of your own. There are many people who would find comfort in knowing there are others who struggle with losing weight. Start a TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) and surround yourself with diet and exercise buddies.

Weight loss meetings can:

  • Meet once a week to discuss weight loss
  • Share weight loss friendly recipes, motivational tips, struggles, and temptations
  • Add a weekly activity to incorporate social time and fitness

If you can get a group together to work out you will be less likely to stop exercising. You can also track your progress as a group to encourage one another.

Another weight loss tip for religious groups are the many tools available for incorporating spiritual growth with weight loss. There are actual curriculum and motivational materials available for purchase to encourage one another through scripture study and prayer while at the same time working on weight loss.

Online Weight Loss Support Groups

You don’t have to be religious, spiritual, or even willing to leave home, to find a support group for weight loss. There are many online support groups that are free which you can join as you lose weight. Many online programs also track your progress and provide helpful hints to help you stay on track with your weight loss plan.

Lose Weight at the Hospital

No, this does not refer to weight loss surgery! Many local hospitals provide support groups for individuals looking to succeed in their weight loss efforts. Often these programs are created especially for the elderly, diabetics, or heart disease patients. For people with health issues, a hospital weight loss group may be ideal.

So start looking around to find a place that can help you lose weight. The right support group can offer motivation, ideas, inspiration, and a path to success. Regardless of where you decide to go, know that gaining the support of friends and family is a precursor to successful weight loss.
