Substitute for Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a condiment that is used for many different food items. From sandwiches to spreads, mayonnaise is one of the most common dressings; yet it is also one of the worst foods you can use for weight loss. Instead of using mayonnaise to add flavor to your food, try to substitute for mayonnaise with different items that carry less fat and less calories.

Ways to Replace Mayonnaise

In sandwiches, mayonnaise is usually used to keep the bread from being too dry. Mustard on your sub sandwich has the same effect and adds flavor to it as well. Mustard has zero calories compared to the 90 calories per tablespoon found in mayonnaise. If you are not a fan of mustard you can use a vinegar and oil mix.

If you absolutely must have your mayonnaise, you can opt for an alternative version. There are less than half the calories of mayonnaise in Miracle Whip and only 10 calories in Nayonnaise, which is a vegan version of mayonnaise, thereby reducing the calories and fat content as well.

Other uses for mayonnaise are in recipes for chicken salad and tuna salad. Next time you are making a tuna salad, use pickle relish as a substitute for mayonnaise. If you have to add some mayo, try just reducing your normal amount until you adjust to skipping the mayo altogether.

With tuna salad, chicken salad, and even potato salad, you can easily create your own substitute for mayonnaise. Using fat free sour cream, capers, and some seasoning such as pepper and garlic, you can have a flavorful dressing for all of your subs, sandwiches, salads, and other mayonnaise recipes. The fat free sour cream dressing also works great for dips.

Another substitute for mayonnaise is yogurt. Yogurt has reduced fat and calories in comparison to mayonnaise and has health benefits as well. It is good for your digestive tract and comes in multiple flavors, so you can vary your recipes according to your desired taste.

Anytime you can substitute one unhealthy ingredient for a better alternative, you have a good weight loss tip. By experimenting with low fat choices and playing with various flavors, you can find your perfect substitute for mayonnaise.
