Celery is an easy crop to grow in your backyard garden. It takes about five months to grow, but the results are a healthy, pesticide free vegetable. You can even start growing celery indoors with the seeds and then plant outdoors in the fall, since celery is considered a cool weather crop. By growing your own vegetables, you can have healthy weight loss foods handy at all times.

Benefits of Celery

Celery contains many health benefits that are necessary for healthy bodies and weight loss. Celery:

  • Contains acetylenics which are said to prevent cancer. Studies have also shown that eating celery lowers your blood pressure
  • Is full of many vitamins and minerals like A, B, C, and potassium
  • Is also a free food, because it takes more calories to burn celery than are in celery
  • Contains only 10 calories, one gram of protein, and zero fat grams per stalk

Celery as a Snack

Celery makes a great snack when working towards a weight loss goal. Wash the celery, dry it, and eat it plain or fill it with a yummy, healthy filling. Spread healthy whipped peanut butter onto celery or whipped, light, or fat free cream cheese. Low fat sugar free yogurt mixed with cinnamon and cranberries makes another delicious spread. You can substitute the yogurt with low fat or fat free whipped topping or cream cheese as a variation.

Celery as a Main Ingredient

If you want to add celery to your weight loss menu, there are many ways to use celery as a main ingredient. Try making cream of celery soup with low fat or fat free milk for a delicious soup that even people who do not care for celery will love. Use celery as a sauce to poor over rice or make into a dressing with mustard and vinegar.

Celery can be incorporated into your diet in many ways. When pursuing a weight loss goal, you should get serious about your celery!
