Losing Weight with Frozen Treats

Losing Weight with Frozen Treats

Have you ever wondered what the best option is for your weight loss plan when you are craving a frozen treat? Well, you might be surprised what types of frozen treats you can eat without blowing your diet!

Ice Cream

Ice cream is high in calories and fat simply because of how it is made. The milk fat that is used to make ice cream is part of the reason ice cream is so fattening. The other factor is the high amounts of sugar that are added to give it its sweet taste.

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to ice cream, try ice milk which is lower in calories.

Ice milk is lower in calories because it is made with low fat milk rather that milk fat. Soft serve ice cream is also lower in calories and fat than traditional ice cream, but it often full of processed ingredients.

Frozen Yogurt

Although low calorie frozen yogurt is lower fat than traditional ice cream, it is often higher in sugar. Be sure and ask for a nutritional guide before purchasing frozen yogurt at your favorite shop. If you are buying non-fat frozen yogurt in the store, read the labels to determine the best choice.

Lastly, frozen yogurt can be healthy for you if it contains live cultures. Live and active cultures contain probiotics which help your digestive tract kill off bad bacteria while maintaining good bacteria. Yogurt that contains live and active cultures will display the National Yogurt Association’s seal of approval.

Sorbets or Granitas

Sorbets or granitas are frozen ice concoctions made with juice or coffee. They are also sweetened with sugar but due to the juice or coffee do not require as much sugar to be added. Sorbets or granitas are usually fat free and much lower in calories than ice cream or frozen yogurt.

When you do not want to blow your diet but are in the mood for a frozen treat, your best option is probably going to be yogurt, ice milk or sorbet. However, you should always review the nutritional information to make the best choice. Choose the treat that:

  • Is under 100 calories
  • Has fewer than four grams of sugar
  • Contains less than 15 grams of sugar

Eating healthy foods and still getting to have the occasional treat is actually the smart way to lose weight. You are less likely to binge when you can satisfy cravings that arise. So stock your freezer with some frozen treats, and enjoy!
