Tex-Mex foods are not only tasty, but you can eat them on a regular basis for weight loss success. You simply have to know what to eat and how to prepare it to keep your meal low fat and low calories for weight loss, but high in protein and nutrition.

Healthy Tex-Mex Ingredients

There are some Tex-Mex ingredients which are healthy and others that are not.

Here are some of the healthy Tex-Mex weight loss friendly ingredients you should include in your recipes.

  • Black beans are wonderful for you. Not only are they high in protein but also in fiber and antioxidants which ward off disease.
  • Tomatoes are another healthy Tex-Mex favorite. Tomatoes for weight loss make great toppings and are found in every bowl of salsa. Tomatoes are high in Vitamin C and lycopene (an antioxidant which wards off cancer).
  • Onions and peppers are also common in Tex-Mex dishes. These make a wonderful addition to any fajita, taco, or burrito. They are a great way to get your vegetables and ward off diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, bacteria, respiratory illness, headaches, and sinus infections.

Unhealthy Tex-Mex Ingredients

Unfortunately, many Tex-Mex dishes are cooked with lard. This is nothing but pure fat. However, you can make many Tex-Mex dishes without lard. Simply substitute low fat margarine and low fat sour cream to get the same consistency and flavoring as lard but without the fat and calories.

Another problem with Tex-Mex foods is that many of the foods are fried. The great news is you do not have to fry your Tex-Mex foods. Try baking your dishes. You will not miss the messy oils used in frying and you will lose weight when you cut your calories and fat in half.

Lastly, you must make a wise choice when choosing a corn taco shell or flour tortilla. Corn taco shells contain 50 calories versus the flour tortilla which has close to 150 calories. Corn taco shells are also low in sodium versus their flour counterparts.

Tex-Mex Meat Choices

Your best meat choices for Tex-Mex foods are going to include fish and chicken. Beef and pork are much higher in fat and calories.

When you are working towards a weight loss goal you do not have to give up foods you love. You simply have to learn the best ways to eat them for your weight loss success. Stick with vegetables, beans, lean meats, and corn tortillas for a yummy Tex-Mex meal.
