Incorporate Low Calorie Foods

One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy diet is to incorporate low calorie foods into your daily regimen. Making small lifestyle changes can have a big impact for a small waistline. Something as simple as eating melon at 30 cal per ½ cup as part of your daily diet can reduce your overall caloric intake.

A great way to incorporate low calorie foods is to start with small changes to your regular meals. Making just one change to each of your meals will have a beneficial impact on weight loss.

For example, instead of a high carbohydrate bagel for breakfast try a slice of whole wheat bread with a spoon of whole fruit jelly. For lunch, add carrot sticks to your meal and at dinnertime try switching to a low calorie dessert, such as a smoothie or fruit salad.

Once you are accustomed to adding low calorie foods to your meals, start swapping unhealthy food choices for low calorie foods for your in-between meal snacks as well. Instead of munching on potato chips, satisfy your need for something crunchy with celery sticks. Some peanut butter and raisins help make this a high energy and protein snack.

You substitute foods, like some low calorie carbohydrates to help satisfy your need for something crunchy. Popcorn and pretzels are great snacks provided they are consumed in small quantities. Other low calorie foods that can be easily incorporated in your diet include:

  • Cottage cheese
  • Strips of bell peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Cauliflower
  • Broccoli
  • Lettuce

Of course, a salad makes an ideal snack or side dish and can be varied with a multitude of low calorie foods.

Fruit, such as tangerines, watermelon, cantaloupe, and tomatoes are also low calorie. Other fruit that is higher in calories but still considered low calorie foods include peaches, apples, nectarines, bananas, cherries, and strawberries.

Learning how to change your eating habits is not an overnight process. However, if you incorporate low calorie foods into your diet you can start to make healthy changes that will make a real difference. Remember, you can eat twice as much of a low calorie food as you can a high one and still obtain the same number of calories.
