Endorphins and Weight Loss

Endorphins and Weight Loss

Two of the most important components of weight loss are diet and exercise. One of the many benefits of exercise is the good feeling you experience after working out. This good feeling is produced by what are known as endorphins. However, you can experience the benefits of endorphins in more ways than simply through exercising.

Endorphins

Endorphins are chemicals that are naturally produced in your body. When you exercise, your body automatically produces the hormones that are known as endorphins. In fact, endorphins produce that good feeling that is similar to that which occurs after taking morphine which is why the hormone is called “endorphin”.

Power of Endorphin

Endorphins are very powerful hormones and offer many benefits.

The connection between regular exercise and weight loss is partly due to the endorphins released from the brain during this process.

They relieve stress, alleviate pain, and improve your mood. In addition to these benefits, endorphins can affect your appetite, increase your sex drive, delay aging, and boost your immune system.

Foods with Endorphins

The best way to experience a release of endorphins is through exercise. However, there are certain foods that will trigger the release of endorphins in your brain. For instance, chili peppers and chocolate both initialize the delivery of endorphins from your brain to the body.

Activities which Release Endorphins

Again, exercise is the number one activity which will cause the discharge of endorphins throughout the body. However, the exercise does not need to be high impact. Both pilates and yoga for weight loss work because the body releases this amazing hormone.

If you are looking to experience a runner’s high then there are certain exercises which have been proven to cause the body to produce large quantities of endorphins. These types of activities include:

  • Swimming
  • Running
  • Skiing
  • Aerobics
  • Cycling

Although not considered exercise, you do receive a workout during sex. In addition to burning calories, sex is another activity that triggers the release of endorphins.

In addition to exercise and sex, endorphins are released during other activities. For instance, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, deep breathing, laughter, and meditation all cause the body to provide endorphins to the body.

There are many ways to experience the release of endorphins in the body. However, you will only experience a surge of endorphins when exercising. The great thing is not only will you experience that feel good feeling; you will also burn fat and calories and ultimately lose weight.
