Choose Sherbet Instead of Ice Cream


It never seems to be too cold to enjoy ice cream. Yet ice cream is very high in fat and calories and makes weight loss very difficult. Instead of eating ice cream, you can have some sherbet for a low calorie cold treat.

Ice cream comes in many flavors, and although there are low fat and low sugar versions they are still bad for weight loss. Remember, when you look at the calorie and fat content for ice cream, it is per serving. One cup of ice cream is a serving and most people eat more than just one cup. (Be sure to read the label because the serving size on ice cream is oftentimes specified by the half cup.)

Why Sherbet is Better for Losing Weight

Sherbet, on the other hand, is a frozen treat that has fruit juice and sugar as the primary ingredients. It does have some milk so it is still a dairy treat, but it is lower in calories and fat.

Just as ice cream comes in a multitude of flavors, sherbet also is available in several choices. Although there may not be as many sherbet flavors as there are ice cream flavors, you can easily expect to find berry, lime, orange, passion fruit, raspberry, and rainbow sherbets.

The difference in nutrition facts between ice cream and sherbet is quite outstanding, which is why choosing sherbet instead of ice cream will make weight loss easier:

  • One cup of sherbet contains approximately 266 calories and 3.8 grams of fat, 2.25 of which is saturated
  • One cup of strawberry ice cream may have only 240 calories but it can also contain 6 grams of fat, 3.5 of which is saturated
  • One cup of chocolate ice cream has about 540 calories and 18 grams of fat

Of the 18 grams of fat in chocolate ice cream, 11 of them are saturated. Keep in mind these numbers are for only one cup of ice cream, which may be equivalent to one scoop, depending on the scoop and who is doing the scooping

By choosing sherbet instead of ice cream you can still enjoy a frozen treat without all of the calories and fat. This difference can really make an impact on your weight loss goals.
